Eighty years ago, Herbert Hoover was president, a gallon of gas cost 10 cents, the 78 story Chrysler building was the tallest in the world and the infamous snack cake, the Twinkie,

was born. In 1930, bakery manager James Dewer was looking for an inexpensive treat to sell to cash strapped customers. After filling idle shortcake pans with banana filling, the Twinkie, the name was inspired by an advertisement for Twinkle Toe shoes was born. Priced at two for a nickel, they began flying off store shelves. Until his death in 1985, Dewer who called the Twinkie “the best darn tootin’ idea I ever had,” says he ate two every night before bed. During World War II, the Twinkie got a makeover after bananas were rationed. The new vanilla cream filling was a huge hit and the recipe for success was set.
