 Time To Go Shopping

A woman’s time of the month is time to go shopping. That’s the conclusion of a recent study showing how the hormonal changes gals experience as they get closer to menstruation seem to boost their desire to shop. And they spend more, too. “Spending was less controlled, more impulsive and more excessive,” says researcher Karen Pine. Over 60% of the women studied reported buying something on impulse within 10 days of their period. Most said they spent at least $40 more than they should have, and some admitted to overspending by $400. Pine adds that shopping may be one way women try to beat the PMS blues. “The spending behavior tends to be a reaction to intense emotions,” explains Pine, a professor at England’s University of Hertfordshire. “They are feeling stressed or depressed and are more likely to go shopping to cheer themselves up and regulate their emotions. “Since surges and fluctuations in hormones affect the part of the brain linked to emotions and inhibitory control, the behavior we found was not surprising.”
