Weapons Found In Car At MacDill
TAMPA — A man and woman were detained after they tried to gain unauthorized access to MacDill Air Force Base on Monday, an official said.
Their Honda sport utility vehicle contained military-style weapons, the official said, but no explosives.
At about 5 p.m. the SUV was stopped at the Bayshore Boulevard gate after the pair was unable to show proper identification, said Katherine B. Holt, a spokeswoman for MacDill.
Security crews found military-style gear and weapons. The contents included about a dozen rifle magazines, a few long bags that are used to hold rifles, military clothing, duffel bags and boxes of ammunition, reports Bay News 9.
MacDill’s Fire Department and explosive ordnance disposal units were dispatched, Holt said, but no explosives were found.
The South Tampa base houses the headquarters of the Central Command, which runs the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, and the Special Operations Command.
