By the middle of next month, the toll booths and toll takers will be gone from the 15-mile highway stretching from South Tampa to Brandon.
The switch, set to take place at 9:30 p.m. Sept. 17, is designed to save money for the Tampa-Hillsborough County Expressway Authority and make it a smoother, faster trip for commuters.
30 toll takers will be out of work – at least those who did not get jobs at other toll-taking positions in the Bay area.
“You won’t pay cash on the road any more,” said Susan Chrzan, a spokeswoman for the authority. “Either you have a SunPass or we bundle your tolls and send you a monthly bill.”
High-tech cameras will be positioned along the expressway to take photographs of the license plates of those using the toll road. The bill will be sent to the addresses that correspond with the vehicle registrations. (tbo)
