It’s forty years since Merle Haggard picked up the CMA Entertainer of the Year trophy, and Trends takes a look at how his classics are doing today as part of Country Music Month.

Merle Haggard collected the CMA Entertainer of the Year prize back in 1970, between a string of hit records and during the peak of his crossover success. Even today most of his top five tracks on come from this golden point in his career.

Only 1975’s “Always Wanting You” comes after his CMA win. At the top 1968’s “Mama Tried” rules the roost, after 111,220 plays from his fans at “Okie From Muskogee” comes a little behind, with 92,818 plays from just shy of 40,000 listeners.

The majority of the songs you’re playing come from the period Haggard won Entertainer of the Year, unlike 1969 winner Johnny Cash whose comeback tracks conquer his charts.
