Ronnie Milsap‘s long career in the spotlight was just starting when he picked up the CMA’s Entertainer of the Year award in 1977. Trends looks at how he’s doing today as part of our Country Music Month coverage.

Milsap scored big with a string of hits in the mid 70’s, crossing over into the mainstream with “It Was Almost Like A Song,” a crossover smash that ultimately secured him the CMA win.

Despite that, it’s only the fourth most popular track among his fans at It’s seen 16,797 scrobbles so far, a little way behind the number one track. “Smoky Mountain Rain” currently lays claim to 22,253 scrobbles, boosted by around 200 listeners every week, a number which has steadily climbed over the last six months.

In fact, the top of his charts are currently dominated by singles that Milsap released in the early eighties. As his sound shifted towards a more modern style he was embraced by more commercial stations, leading to a career boost that won him thousands of fans.

Though he didn’t see a single CMA nod between 1978 and 1986, he found himself the recipient of Grammy awards and Academy of Country Music gongs instead. Not a bad showing at all.

Make sure to come back next week for more from the Trends team, as our Country Music Month celebrations continue.
