shooter jennings Shooter Jennings Demands More XXX

Shooter Jennings has been causing a stir among the country music blogs recently with his call for a new radio format.

XXX – named for the labels on bottles of moonshine – seeks to rope in some of the acts Jennings thinks have been marginalized by radio playlists in the last twenty years.

But is there a call for it? Last.fm Trends takes a look.

When it comes to Last.fm listeners you can be sure of one thing; they’re an eclectic bunch. No tracks have ever been categorized by the site – or music labels – and it’s been left to listeners to add their own tags to the songs they listen to, coming up with new categories and genres every day.

Lots of the tags given to Jennings are fairly familiar; it’s no surprise that the most popular are things like ‘country,’ ‘alt-country‘ and ‘southern rock,’ categories with incredibly diverse occupants.

But others make it in there too; ‘alt-texas-red dirt country‘ is close in spirit to the XXX label Jennings is trying to coin, with acts like Bleu Edmonson and The Lost Trailers joining him on the list.

Country or something like it‘ is another gem, and it features tracks from the legendary Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings as well as Shooter and The Hag.

But even then, these small tags don’t have nearly the impact of the wider genres; ‘country’ has been used 242,090 times, while ‘country or something like it’ has been used just 81.

Sadly for Jennings, the ‘xxx‘ tag has already been taken. With a list of artists that range between hard rock and R’n’B it’s going to be a hard space to colonize. But if the singer brings his 64,343 listeners with him – and the fans of the 70+ bands the movement lists as supporters – then it won’t take too long.

Help him out, or discover music that’s a little closer to your tastes, by joining Last.fm today.
