Street Date: Eli Young Band’s Inspirational ‘Life At Best’
[pullquote quote="Way back on the radio dial, the fire got lit inside a bright-eyed child. Every note just wrapped around his soul, from steel guitars to Memphis, all the way to rock and roll." credit="Eli Young Band, 'Even If It Breaks Your Heart' "] These are the first lyrics off the first track to the [mp3com-artist]Eli Young Band[/mp3com-artist]‘s latest album.. and they’re a good description of the great music that follows it on the CD. You’ll find some great songwriting on this album and performances to match. I’m especially fond of the “advice” from the first track, “Keep on dreaming even if it breaks your heart.” Nice melody with an infectious hook. Perhaps one of two or three songs on the disc that has potential to be a chart single. I’m still humming the chorus. That’s a good sign.
Fortunately for whole-album music lovers, the guys don’t try to crank out easy hits, going instead for soulful, often melancholy music. I have to admit, I was looking forward to hearing “Crazy Girl” thinking it might be about a lunatic woman along the lines of Runaway Bride Jennifer Wilbanks or the bank-robbing stripper cops recently caught in Colorado. Nah. It’s an “I’m crazy about you, girl” song.
[pullquote quote="Everyone has their trials and tribulations and no matter how much success you have you've gotta keep maintaining." credit="James Young, explaining Title Track"]Thankfully, “Skeletons” isn’t about Mary Kate Olsen, Kate Moss or everyone’s favorite bag of antlers, Nicole Richie. And there’s the rather odd “I Love You” Which features insightful lyrics along the lines of “Some people are criminals, some people are roofers ..but I love you.” Ok, those aren’t the actual lyrics, but close enough.
“The Fight” is probably my second favorite cut on the album, though the balance of the record takes me back to the really good southern-sounding, meaningful songs of the mid-’70s. The best lyric of the album comes from “The Falling:” “It ain’t the falling in love that kills me; it’s the sudden stop.” Brilliant!
James Young explains that the title track was inspired by a saying that has been in his family for a long time:
