Keith Urban‘s 3rd annual We’re All For The Hall benefit concert was full of more than just great bands and country music. It was also a life changing moment for the Australian singer as Vince Gill, Rascal Flatts and the Oak Ridge Boys gave Keith a surprise of a lifetime!
During his set on stage, Vince Gill and friends bombarded the stage to a shocked and confused Urban. “Keith, will you put that guitar down for just one second?” Vince asked as the Aussie country star looked around before setting his instrument down. “We have a gift for Keith Urban that we are thrilled to give to you tonight,” he continued as Rascal Flatts’ Gary Levox joined them all on stage with a large black duffel bag. “It’s not Nicole,” Gill joked, referring to Urban’s fellow Australian wife Nicole Kidman.
In a flash, Urban’s life was changed as he unzipped the bag to commentary from Gill. “Ladies and gentlemen, we would like to invite Keith Urban to be the next member of the Grand Ole Opry,” he finished to screams from the crowd and a humbled & surprised Urban.
“I don’t know what to say,” the GRAMMY winner admitted as he finally gained his composure. “I’m shocked. What a huge honor and how beautiful to have this happen tonight of all nights.”
During his personal and heartwarming thank you’s, Urban reflected on the first time he came to Nashville trying to sell his music to record labels.
“I’ve been here 20 years this year. Nineteen eighty-nine was the first year I came over from Australia to take my demo around to all of the record labels and I got a lot of strange looks. But I really wanted to make Nashville home and I managed to do it over the next few years. I always wanted to play the Opry and I’ll always remember the first time I played it. Seeing this stand and coming out and standing in the circle was [an] extraordinary surreal moment. So this right here was in a whole other stratosphere and I can’t thank you enough so thank you from the bottom of my heart. This means the world to me.”
Before finishing the celebration, he made sure to thank those most important in his life. “I share this tonight with my wife Nicole and our daughters, this is from all of us, thank you very much!”
The Grand Ole Opry got the entire exchange on video and are currently selling tickets to his induction ceremony, which you can get here. So far, Josh Turner is slated to perform at the ceremony with more acts to be added.
