As one of the most talked about issues in America, gay marriage is a hot topic, whether you swing to the conservative or the liberal side of the fence. Recently, President Obama spoke out in support of same-sex marriage just a day after North Carolina passed an amendment banning any union other than between male and female.
Despite the controversial nature of the topic, Carrie Underwood is now the first country megastar to admit support of gay marriage.
In a recent interview with Britain’s The Independent, Underwood contributes her upbringing and love for faith as the reasoning behind the stance.
Feeling passionate about “people who use the Bible for hate,” she added, “that’s not how I would want myself as a Christian to be represented.”
No doubt, the recent news of Underwood’s support could anger her more conservative fanbase. Currently, only six states and Washington D.C. recognize same-sex marriage in the eyes of the law.
“As a married person myself, I don’t know what it’s like to be told I can’t marry somebody I love, and want to marry,” she admitted during the interview. “I can’t imagine how that must feel. I definitely think we should all have the right to love, and love publicly the people that we want to love.”
Though Underwood is known for releasing many religious-centric songs, such as her debut “Jesus, Take The Wheel” and current Blown Away track “See You Again,” she believes her Baptist upbringing and current appreciation for love has molded her mind to be more receiving of the issue.
“Our church is gay friendly,” she tells The Independent. “Above all, God wanted us to love others…. We’re all different. That’s what makes us special.”
Underwood isn’t the first country artist to speak out for the gay community. Two years ago “Single White Female” singer Chely Wright revealed to the country world that she was gay. This past May, she spoke about the experience to CBS This Morning. Though it was hard to handle, she felt as though the country world had iced her out since her coming out. “It’s…a rejection mostly because I would like to hear a country music artist, the big ones, not just say, ‘Well, I like Chely. I like her even though she’s gay.’” Wright continued stating her disappointment in the lack of country artists supporting her and the gay community. “I need a country artist who is a big deal, like Jay-Z in his community. I’m struggling because I have not heard that from the big stars in country music.”
Well, Wright can take a deep breath now, because Underwood is easily one of the biggest names in country music today, and her support is undeniable. “We have to love each other and get on with each other. It’s not up to me to judge anybody,” Underwood finished.
The Blown Away Tourwill be spanning across America and Canada this fall with opening act Hunter Hayes. Tour dates include heading to Florida at the end of the year!
