The last survivor of the giant tortoises that roamed the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador has died. The tortoise named Lonesome George was estimated at over 100 years old was found dead in the Galapagos National Park over the weekend. Lonesome George is currently in a refrigerated chamber, so he doesn’t decompose.
George came from Pinta Island in the Galapagos and was rescued in 1972 by hunters, who were getting rid of goats that were destroying the habitat that George lived in. George was then since to the National Park and officials tried to breed George , but were unsuccessful because the eggs were infertile.
