Well before he started making a name for himself as a recording artist, Kix Brooks was earning acclaim as a songwriter, and Kix says that his approach to songwriting — like he’s taken on his new solo album, New to This Town — is that of following whatever feels right, and telling stories and playing roles that fit the songs — because when it comes to storytelling in a song, it’s a lot like being an actor.  He told Sony Music: “It’s hard to really know where you’re goin’ or what you’re doin’, especially if you’re writing songs. I mean, as an artist, it generally just kind of reflects on how you feel at the time, where ya are in your life and that kind of thing, and it’s not necessarily any more self-prophesy, or for me, I try not to get really too personal and actually have been criticized by, you know, writin’ songs about pickin’ up girls or this or that when you’ve been married 30 years. But as a singer, you’re also an actor. And it’s like tellin’ an actor, just because you’ve been married 30 years that you can’t play a role that’s totally different from what you do. I mean, that’s the whole fun of bein’ in a creative business and comin’ up with stuff that you might not ordinarily do or things that you remember doin’. I mean, I guess at some point it’s not appropriate where you’re too old to be talkin’ about stuff like that, but you know, when you’re young in your heart and you’re writin’ songs, you don’t get away from that stuff. It’s just part of what you do.”
