Joanna Smith got a little help from a friend when it came to her beautiful new single, “We Can’t Be Friends.” It’s a song she’d wanted to record and thought would be perfect for her, but at the time, there was a big star who had it on hold and was planning to record it himself. Happily, Joanna just happened to know the big star well enough to ask him about it, and I’ll let her finish telling the story of how she came to record “We Can’t Be Friends.”  “Well, when I heard it for the first time, I just immediately had the gut feelin’ that I had to have it. I was consciously looking for an undeniable and universal song that anybody, across every demographic, could relate to. So before it even got to the chorus, I was like, ‘This is it.’ It was on hold for Kenny Chesney; I couldn’t have it. I was quite disappointed — kind of an understatement — I was devastated that I couldn’t have it. And Kenny and I had been friends, and so I was like, ‘I’m just gonna e-mail him and get the scoop,’ so I did. And he e-mailed me back and said he was gonna cut it. So I ended up havin’ to wait for almost a year to actually get to record it, and he had continued to go in the studio, and he would take the song in the studio, and he just would never end up recording it. He’d record other songs first, and in the end, he said that he felt it was stronger from the female perspective — and I agree.” (laughs)
