To ring in 2013, don’t just munch on the usual pigs in a blanket and artichoke dip, try these five recipes that put a new twist on some of the usual suspects when it comes to party appetizers.

When it comes to party planning, Martha Stewart is the grand priestess so she’s not making any run of the mill pizza pockets this year. Instead she’s making mini-pizzas with a little panache.

Martha’s recipe for antipasti pizza, which uses store-bought pizza dough, takes the usual pizza ingredients and adds in a few pitted olives, canned artichokes, sun-dried tomatoes and salami. Not your thing? Feel free to throw in whatever you want, this is your party after all.

Shawnda, better known as the Foodie Bride, came up with a way to update the classic pimento cheese spread by putting it on a crostini. And let’s be honest, anything on a crostini seems fancy.

Take a bit of shredded mozzarella and mix it up with a little mayonnaise, some roasted peppers and green onion. Toast slices of French bread to make your crostini (or buy a box at your local supermarket) and put a dollop of your cheese mixture on top for a simple but fancy app.

For your all-in one veggie platter, Chris Nease from the Celebrations at Home blog suggests carving out 2 inch slices of cucumber and filling it with your favorite dip like onion, dill or ranch. Looking for some festive garnish? Add a sprinkling of bacon bits and a few caramelized onions to the top.

Caprese salad might not be a staple when it comes to party food, but for Terri Powers’ reinvention on her blog, Terri’s Table, she turns the salad into a finger food. All you’ll need is some basil leaves, cherry tomatoes and mini-mozzarella balls, which you can get at your supermarket. Put them on a toothpick together and add a dab of balsamic vinegar. No fork required.

On her blog, My Homemade Life, Sally Darling makes jalapeño poppers look easy by using Pillsbury crescent roll dough, cream cheese and diced jalapenos from a jar.  She adds her own little secret ingredient, but you’ll have to read her blog to find out what it is.

What are some of your favorite foods to make for New Years Eve?
