Bonnie Raitt had nine GRAMMYS before tonight’s ceremony, and just won her tenth – and first since 1996 – taking the Best Americana Album, in a very strong category. She won against her all-male and all-contemporary competition of Mumford & Sons, the Lumineers and the Avett Brothers). She saluted her fellow nominees in the category.
“I have enough, thank you though!” she exclaimed. ”This is the same face I was wearing that other time.” A consummate musician, she also said, “Give it up for the band!” referring to the house band who performs through the four hour ceremony (which streams on the official GRAMMY website).
“Thank yo u so much to all the musicans, songwriters and [producer] Joe Henry. My parents for giving me the gene pool that allows me to be up here,” referencing her father, Broadway star John Raitt, and her mother, a pianist Marjorie Haydock.
Her four wins at the 1990 GRAMMYS was seen a big comeback, and led to her career’s “second act.” Referencing this, she said, “To have a third bloom is so amazing.”
For their part, The Lumineers were happy just to be nominated, as they recently told Radio.com: “If we win a GRAMMY we will have the worst speech in GRAMMY history because we’re not really expecting to win,” Wesley admitted. “We’re pretty honored to be nominated and that’s pretty shocking in and of itself. Who knows if we’ll even be there. I don’t know if we’ve made those plans yet so we’ll see.”
