The songwriting team of Josh Kear and Chris Tompkins have done it again. After landing their first GRAMMY together for writing Carrie Underwood’s 2008 hit “Before He Cheats,” they landed another one this year for Carrie’s smash 2012 hit “Blown Away.”

“I didn’t expect this one,” Chris Thompson said when he and Josh took the stage to accept their award. “Stiff competition this year!” He’s not kidding: The four other songs in the category were Eric Church’s “Springsteen,” the Eli Young Band’s “Even If It Breaks Your Heart,” Ronnie Dunn’s “Cost of Livin’,” and Alan Jackson’s “So You Don’t Have To Love Me Anymore.”

Josh made sure to give a shout-out to all he and Chris’s fellow hard-working writers. “They don’t give out many awards [at ceremonies like this] to songwriters,” he said. “Everybody who spends every day of your life doing that, that’s a gift you’re giving to us. Thank you.”

And during an interview backstage at the GRAMMYs after their win, Josh echoed what Chris said about the competition being stiff in the country song category this year. “It’s such a songwriters town,” he said of Nashville, so when you consider the other writers he and Chris were up against, “its almost insurmountable odds.”

The 55th GRAMMY Awards air tonight (Feb. 10) at 8pm ET on CBS.
