IMPACT: Blake Shelton
Hitting stores and digital outlets on Tuesday, March 26, Based On A True Story… is Blake’s eighth studio album. Fans got their first taste of Blake’s new material just after the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Day this year, when he first released his brand-new single “Sure Be Cool If You Did.” The song quickly caught fire with fans, and it turned yet another No. 1 hit for Blake–the fastest-rising No. 1 of his career, in fact.
The song, says Blake, is “basically a pick-up line” but it’s “really clever.” Another thing that drew him to it was that it “incorporates a lot of cool sounds–samples, snaps, and loops that I haven’t played around with that much.”
The ACM Entertainer of the Year nominee goes on to say that he deliberately chose not to play the lead role in the video, because “everyone knows I’m married to Miranda Lambert.”
Blake’s album Based On A True Story… includes 12 new songs and a whole lot of sounds both familiar and fresh. There are ballads such as “Do You Remember” and “Mine Would Be You” as well as roll-the-windows-down sing-along anthems such as “Country On The Radio.” And the album’s opener, the rugged “Boys ‘Round Here,” even mixes Southern rock and roll with elements of hip-hop.
And the title? As Blake explains it, “I was listening to the album and I thought, ‘Man, every song on here is either “Been there, done that,” or I’m doing it right now,’ so it really is my true life.”
In addition to his music, Blake has achieved widespread acclaim for his work as a coach on TV’s The Voice. The fourth season of The Voice, in fact, kicks off on Monday, March 25, a day before his album release.
Because of that show, Blake has to spend a lot of time in L.A., and so one of the songs on the album, “Small Town Big Time,” is–to him at least–a reference to this experience. “If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like for me to be in Los Angeles,” says Blake, “that’s it. Even though my life is crazy and it takes me all theses places–which is cool–back home is where I belong, and that’s what the song is about.”
And of course, what would a Blake Shelton experience be without a little irreverence? “Still Got A Finger” is in some ways a modern version of Johnny Paycheck’s “Take This Job and Shove It,” only instead of words, the protagonist uses his finger to express his feelings. As Blake explains, “It’s probably something that would never happen, but we all wish we could do that at some point.”
Overall, though, Blake says he’s in a good place in his life right now, and this album reflects that.
“I’m happy and I’m thankful and I want to sound like that in my record,” he explains. “I want to be that guy on my albums right now because I don’t have that dark cloud I’ve had before and that we’ve all had in our lives. If you listen to this album, by the end you’ll go, ‘Man, this guy’s pretty happy with his lot in life!’ And I am.”
