The National Weather Service is reporting that they have upgraded the May 31, El Reno, Oklahoma tornado to an EF-5 twister with surface winds of 296 MPH and with a width of 2.6 miles, the widest ever recorded.

The El Reno tornado killed 18 people including three veteran storm chasers – one of which was Tim Samaras the former star of Discovery Channel’s “Storm Chasers”. Their deaths should remind us of the extreme danger these twisters bring to the people in their path and also to the scientists and photographers who study them.

What is it like to chase a tornado, then to be chased by it? Watch the video and see for yourself.

Discovery Channel says it will air a tribute to the fallen Storm Chasers on June 4 at 10 p.m.
