Twenty-eight years ago today Americans watched as the Challenger space shuttle took off and then just over a minute later witnessed the catastrophic explosion.

Commander Francis “Dick” Scobee, pilot Michael Smith, mission specialists Judith Resnik, Ellison Onizuka and Ronald McNair, and payload specialists Gregory Jarvis and first teacher in space, Christa McAuliff were all aboard the Challenger when the explosion happened.
