Mars in “Opposition”
Opposition is a term used to describe when a planet lies directly opposite the sun in Earth’s sky. It’s rare, and it’s happening tonight.
The planet Mars, Earth, and the sun will all be in a near straight line which means Mars will rise at sunset and stay visible all night long.
It will be a bright burnt orange color and shouldn’t be hard to spot because it will shine almost 10 times brighter than the brightest stars.
Mars and Earth will be “only” 57 million miles away from each other next week, and that won’t happen again until May 22, 2016.
