Wade Bowen On Momma’s Cooking

I don’t think there’s a man, woman, or child alive that doesn’t just rave about their momma’s cooking and Wade Bowen is no exception, Wade says that his mom has always been a great cook. “My memories of my mom are always her in the kitchen. It’s just always kind of been a thing in our family to be good cooks. And my memories with my mom are always just walkin’ in the door and her in the kitchen, cooking, all the time. I remember when I was in high school, my curfew was, like, midnight, I think, yeah, midnight, and I came home and I brought, like, nine or 10 of my friends with me, and we all crashed, ’cause that was the way our house was. It was always the place where we all crashed. Everyone stayed there; everybody felt good in our house, you know — they felt a lot of love. And so we came there, and she woke up at 12:30 and cooked enough bacon, eggs, and biscuits for 10 high school growin’ boys, which, you can imagine how much that was to fill us all up — in the middle of the night, just ’cause…out of sheer love. And that pretty much sums her up.”

Chris Young knows how big a day Mother’s Day is and also knows its not the size of the prize: “It’s a really big time of year for everybody. Even if it’s just to get to spend a little time with your mom. You know, it’s not necessarily all about, you know, getting her a gift, it’s about just saying, ‘Thank you.’ I mean, they really do shape so much of your life. Your parents do. And your mom’s always a big person. Especially for me. She raised us for a little while, me and my sister, basically by herself. Before my stepdad, who I call my dad, came in the picture, it was just her. And we…I never, as a kid, wanted for anything. And that was how my mom looked at everything. And that’s how a lot of moms do, and I think that’s why we have a Mother’s Day. Just some of the stuff they do, that they give up for their children, really to make sure you have a great life and a great experience as a child. It’s pretty amazing how much of their personal time they give up, and go, you know, “This isn’t for me, this is for my kid.”

Mother’s Day was Sunday and Miranda Lambert recalls when her mom was her booking agent: “Mom and I — she was bookin’ me in bars — I was playin’ Texas, so my mom was like my booking agent. She was working with me, and she was kind of like my boss in a way, and I hated that ’cause she was also my boss in life, ’cause she’s my mom. And so, that was a tough time, but we’re also one of those families where we can just get in a huge screamin’ match and five minutes later, ‘I love you,’ you know? We’re not one of those, like, stay-mad-for-a-long-time kind of people.”

Mother’s Day was Sunday and I thought you’d like to hear from some of your favorite artist on how they celebrate motherhood with these stories and memories. Sara Evans said she can always count on her mom: “If I’m ever upset or I need anything, and if I call my mom, as soon as she says, ‘Hello,’ then tears just start flowing, you know, ’cause there’s something about my mom that she’s such a pillar of strength, and she’s a really hard worker. She’s really tall. My mother’s like five ten and a half, and I always have looked up to her, and — literally looked up to her — and she’s just really, really a rock, you know, and she has great advice. And she’s very much a homemaker. She’s an incredible cook. She’s an incredible worker. She’s a farmer. And so any advice as far as being a homemaker comes from her, ’cause she’s great. And I’m actually so blessed because I have an amazing mother, and I have an amazing mother-in-law and a great stepmom, so it’s like I have these three women in my life who are really beautiful, wonderful women.”

“I think one of the most important lessons that I’ve from my mom is just, no matter what life throws at you, is just to take a step back and a deep breath and just still take life as it comes. She’s been through a lot in her life. And she’s handled it. And she’s come through it, I believe, with a lot of grace…and a lot of style. And I’ve learned a lot from that. She has taught me a lot directly and indirectly. And she’s a hard worker, but she loves life. And I thank God that I got my love of life from her.”

Tyler Farr’s dad, who’s been running a Mexican restaurant for the past 20 or so years, says Cinco de Mayo is always a fun day at work with his dad. Tyler told Sony Music Nashville about celebrating at his dad’s Mexican restaurant: “It was a year or two ago, I flew in. He wanted me to play at his restaurant around Cinco de Mayo, so we had a good time. It’s always good to see everybody. All the girls turn into an absolute hot mess on Cinco de Mayo with their stomachs filled with…of tequila and tacos, so…” (laughs)

Carrie Underwood Is Dramariffic

As you are well aware by now, Carrie Underwood‘s new album, Blown Away, is in stores now. Carrie co-wrote eight of the album’s 14 songs. Was it hard? We’ll let her speak for herself: “It’s fun writing ’cause you just don’t know where you’re gonna end up. At least for me, when I go into a writing session, I try not to have too many parameters to follow. I don’t want to be in a box. The song…sometimes we’ll end up at the end of the day with a song that I really wouldn’t sing. Like, it just doesn’t sound like me, and, like, wouldn’t fit on the album in any way. But the day just kind of dictates where it’s gonna go. Maybe somebody else’ll sing that on their album someday ’cause the writers go and pitch the songs anyway to other people, and that’s awesome. But you just don’t know. We just go in not knowing if it’s gonna be happy, sad, excited — you know — ‘dramariffic’ or otherwise. It just happens. And that’s fun. ‘Dramariffic’ — I just made that up.”

Miranda Lambert Says She’s Still Just Miranda

Miranda Lambert may be very much in the eye of the public but when it comes down to talking with her she says her job hasn’t changed who she is inside or how she relates to people. “I like it when people just treat me normal, ’cause I’m just a normal girl. I just happen to have a really great job. And it’s definitely different on different levels that you reach. For Blake and I, it’s not really…we can’t just go to Walmart anymore. It’s different since this…we’ve both reached this different level in our careers which is…it’s a good thing but it’s also sometimes like you can’t do normal things at certain times because you…we have to remember, ‘Oh, people think we’re famous,’ (laughs) so we have to sort of be careful about those things, but we love just to go and go home and ride four-wheelers and hunt and fish, and we are exactly who you would think we would be, on and off stage, you know, there’s not really a difference, and we don’t have a lot to hide. Both of us are pretty open and honest, and our fans pretty much know everything about us, and we like that about our relationship with our fans.”

From our “Someone to watch out for department,” Kristen Kelly is just that person, and really cool things have started to be happening for her. Kristen’s new to radio and with her new single “Ex-Old Man,” things have started to happen. She made her debut on the Grand Ole Opry, and chart history when her song marked the first time a new female artist’s debut single topped the most added list in a trade publication. She shares chart space with George Strait. Kristen just says thanks: “Thank you to country radio! I can not thank country radio enough! My single hit country radio this week, and I tied with George Strait for the number-one most-added song at country radio, and I…I’m still, I’m trying to wrap my mind around it. I…I honestly…I can’t thank country radio enough. What about a welcome…man, I feel so blessed and welcomed by that.”

Saturday June 2 is the date 4-4:30 ish is the time. That’s when things start a-poppin at the Brothers of the Sun Tour featuring Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw. Special guests include Grace Potter & The Nocturnals and Jake Owen. And it all gets under way right here in Tampa Fla. at Raymond James Stadium. Lately Kenny feels like a rock star and says he’ll probably make the song a staple of his live shows. Kenny tells Sony Music Nashville: “‘Feel Like a Rock Star’ is gonna be a song that I pretty much know, setting right here, is gonna be a song that I do forever in my live show. It defines what we do live. And the fact that I have my friend Tim McGraw on this song just adds a different element of chemistry that it wouldn’t have had.”
